Talking can fuck you up. Talking can also un-fuck, your fucked up-edness. Talk some more and you get to fuck. Talk some more and people can fuck with you.
Here is the deal: If you think, thinking is sexy then Cronenberg delivers. The movie isn't titillating, it is tantalizing. I walked out of the movie theater with a familiar emotion -- the feeling of just having seen my therapist, had him ask me a bunch of questions, raise all kinds of issues in an hour and a half session and the buzzer rings and I’m out in the cold wondering what the fuck does it mean?
I resonated with Fassbender’s Jung. His intellect combined with rigid propriety created a thick shell over his seething sexuality -- repression incarnate. Vincent Cassel, as Otto Gross, stole the screen as the never repress anything devil. Gross penetrated Jung’s shell and the cracks reveal themselves in all of the other scenes, shot by Cronenburg as if his character Jung was behind the camera.
The entire movie carries the undercurrent of the upcoming World Wars and the carnage and death that are about to tear across Europe after the events in this movie. Sex, death, societal control versus freedom, mental health versus mental illness, submitting to reality or attempting to change reality are all questions asked by the movie, and like any good therapist, none of the questions are answered. That task is left up to you.
